As the ever-lasting drama of the Indian Premier League (IPL) unfolded in the 13th edition of the event in Dubai, let’s sit back and take a look at how a couple of young guns faired. While the mainstays did live up to the hype, this year’s IPL also witnessed some talented youngsters snatching the limelight with their marvelous feats.
We take a look at the two new faces in the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings rosters. Both batting at the opening position, struck the ball tremendously well, thus cementing the franchise’s faith.
Devdutt Padikkal: The 20-year-old Karnataka batsman times the ball so well that RCB fixed his position at the top besides Aaron Finch. The flamboyant southpaw amassed 472 runs at an average of 33.71. Striking at 126.54, Padikkal struck five fifties in 14 games. He finished in the 4th position with the highest score of 74, after the league stage, preceded by the likes of KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and David Warner respectively. He became the batsman with most fifty or fifty-plus scores in a debut season. Padikkal became the only player in IPL history to score three fifties in his first four games.
Ruturaj Gaikwad: Although ending up at the 37th spot in the runs table this year, Gaikwad is a handsome striker of the white ball. Featuring only in 6 games for Chennai Super Kings as an opener, the 23-year-old didn’t have the best of the start to the tournament but he bagged 3 fifties out of 6 games. Averaging 51.00 and striking at 120.71, the Maharashtra batsman gathered 204. His highest score was 72. Making his debut in the latter half of the tournament, Gaikwad became instrumental in CSK’s three consecutive victories at the tail end of the league.
