IPL 2021: KKR beat Mumbai and climb to 4th; Venkatesh, Rahul steal show with batting

Kolkata Knight Riders beat the defending champions Mumbai Indians by seven wickets and 29 balls remaining in the game.

KKR skipper Eoin Morgan won the toss and offered Mumbai Indians to bat first.

KKR before the start of this second phase were not even among the favourites to make it to the playoffs.

KKR in their last two matches against top teams like RCB and MI proved why they are the two time champions and not the underdogs.

Sunil Narine was awarded with player of the match for his economical bowling. Narine took the wicket of dangerous Rohit Sharma.

Match Summary

The Knights won the toss and offered Mi to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock came into open the innings for the team.

The way MI started, they must have made KKR regret their decision. Mi Crossed the 50 runs mark in the first powerplay itself.

It was Sunil Narine, who gave the team break through in the 10th over in form of the skipper Rohit Sharma. Rohit returned back after scoring 33 of 30 balls, it also included 4 boundaries.

Quinton de Kock completed his half-ton, he scored 55 runs of 42 deliveries. Apart from him, no other batsmen were able to leave any impact from MI squad.

After Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock’s wicket, it was as if KKR took over the match. Prasidh Krishna and Lockie Ferguson grabbed two wickets each and restricted MI to a score of 155.

The score was not much but MI had the bowling that could defend even a score like this.

Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer came to open for the Knights. They made their intent clear from the first over itself after hitting Trent Boult for two gigantic sixes.

Iyer picked up from where he left in the RCB match but Shubman handed over his wicket in the third over to Bumrah.

Than came Rahul Tripathi to the pitch. He and Iyer smacked two blazing fifties.

It was as if both of them were making a mockery out of the MI bowling. They were hitting them for boundaries, whenever they want and wherever they wanted to.

Iyer lost his wicket to Bumrah in the 12th over but by then, he had already done his job. KKR now were just moments away from victory.

Then came the skipper, Morgan did hit a maximum but couldn’t leave much impact as he lost his wicket to Bumrah too.

Tripathi continued to lead the team but winning shots came from the bat of Nitish Rana.

The Knights conquered the match with 29 balls remaining and climbed to number 4 from 6 in the points table.

Jasprit Bumrah was the only Bowler from the MI side to take wickets. His figures were 3-43 in four overs.

KKR showcased great temperament and skill, since the beginning of the second phase of IPL 2021.

The Knights would like to continue their winning streak and make it to the playoffs, even try to will the tournament.

MI needs to get back in the game. Their next game is against RCB. The match will be difficult for both sides as they both would be looking to get back on the winning track.
