Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians pulled off an epic comeback on Tuesday to beat KKR by 10 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite having an upper hand on MI, Kolkata choked under pressure as they failed to chase down 153. Andre Russell, earlier, was the star of the pack as he picked up five wickets giving away just 15 runs in two overs. Rahul Chahar was adjudged the Man of the Match for his match-winning spell (4/27) for Mumbai.

Mumbai stun KKR

Mumbai’s stronghold against Kolkata extended as they snatched an unbelievable win from the jaws of Eoin Morgan and Co. Rohit Sharma has now won 10 out of his 11 games against KKR. Kolkata have now lost 22 matches against Mumbai out of 28.

Kolkata came out to chase down 153 and started well. Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana kneaded yet another 50-run partnership to give KKR a solid lead. However, things changed once Rahul Chahar was brought into the action.

Rocket Rahul

Brilliant captaincy from Rohit, paid off yet again and proved why they are so dominant. Chahar struck in his very first over when he removed set batsman Gill. Gill departed for a well-made 33 after 72 runs opening stand with Rana.

Rana was still holding the fort from the opposite end, but wickets kept falling from the other end. Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan and Shakib Al Hasan returned on single figures as Mumbai tightened screws. And, finally Nitish was out stumped off Chahar.

There on, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell tried to keep the run rate in check but failed to do so. With mounting pressure, Mumbai clawed their way back in, ultimately leaving KKR needing 15 off the last. Trent Boult bowled a brilliant over to restrict Morgan and Co high and dry.

KKR bowl out Mumbai

Kolkata won the toss and opted to field. Kolkata started well with the ball as Mumbai got an early jolt. Varun Chakravarthy picked up his first wicket of IPL 2021 in the form of de Kock. Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav pulled things back for MI after a sluggish start.

However, an inspired bowling change from Morgan led to a dramatic collapse of Mumbai. Andre Russell was sent to bowl two overs in the death and he paid off. He picked up five wickets. Mumbai could make 152 before getting bowled out in the last ball. This was the first time since 2018, that MI were bowled out in a game.

Stat of the match

Russell’s figures are now the third best figures in a defeat in IPL.
