IPL 2021: KL Rahul diagnosed with acute appendicitis, hospitalised

KL Rahul, Team Indian wicketkeeper-batsman and IPL franchise Punjab Kings’ captain, has been hospitalised with acute appendicitis. The official Twitter handle of Punjab Kings confirmed on Sunday. The right hander joined Punjab in 2018 and was named the captain in 2020. He is currently the orange cap holder of the IPL 2021 edition.

Punjab Kings’ official statement

Punjab Kings released a official statement on Rahul’s health. It stated, “KL Rahul complained of a severe abdomen pain last night and after not responding to medication, he was taken to the emergency room for further tests which revealed that he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.”

“It will be resolved surgically and for safety measures he has been transferred to the hospital for the same,” it ended.

Rahul has played all seven games for Punjab Kings so far in the 14th edition of the league. He has scored 331 runs averaging 66.20. He has struck 27 fours and 16 sixes at 136.21. His last seven scores in IPL 2021 are – 91, 5, 61, 4, 60*, 19, 91*.

Rahul’s IPL career

In the 2018 IPL Auction, Kings XI Punjab bought him for INR 11 crore, the joint-third highest price. In the team’s first match of the season he scored the fastest 50 in IPL history, taking 14 balls to reach the milestone and breaking the record of Sunil Narine.

After making scores of 90+ three times during 2018, he reached his maiden IPL century in 2019, scoring 100 not out from 64 against Mumbai Indians. Rahul became captain of the Kings XI Punjab for the 2020 IPL.

In the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on 24 September 2020, he scored an unbeaten 132 off just 69 balls. With that century, he broke the record of the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in an IPL match. He also broke the record of the most runs scored by a captain in an IPL match.
