Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary Indian batsman, has encouraged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to train KL Rahul as the country’s next captain.
Gavaskar wants KL Rahul to be named India’s T20 vice-captain, with Rohit Sharma expected to take over as skipper following Virat Kohli‘s decision to step out following the T20 World Cup.
“It’s a good thing that the BCCI is looking ahead. It’s important to think ahead,” said Sunil Gavaskar on Sports Tak.
“If India are looking to groom a new captain, then KL Rahul can be looked at. He has performed well. Even now in England, his batting was very good. He has been performing well in IPL and 50-overs cricket as well at the international stage. He can be made vice-captain,” added Gavaskar.

Gavaskar praised the elegant Karnataka batsman for his outstanding leadership in the IPL.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul is the captain of the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League.
“He has shown very impressive leadership qualities in the IPL. He hasn’t let the burden of captaincy affect his batting. His name can be taken into consideration,” said Gavaskar.
In white-ball formats, the 34-year-old Rohit Sharma is Kohli’s deputy, and he is likely to take over as captain when India hosts New Zealand in a home series in November that will include three T20 Internationals and two Test matches.
Rohit Sharma has also led India to Asia Cup glory in the past in the T20 format. The Mumbai Indians skipper has a fine record as captain in the shortest format of the game.
