Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were under pressure from the start as Miguel Almiron was a lively presence throughout the opening half hour. De Gea was called into action when he punched clear Jonjo Shelvey’s cross.
Shortly after Joelinton forced the United ‘keeper into a fingertip save via a deflection off Victor Lindelof. However, Rashford fired Man United ahead in the 30th minute beating defender Emil Krafth and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Karl Darlow inside the near post.
Newcastle exposed that soft underbelly in the 36th minute, when Allan Saint-Maximin took advantage of a poor clearance by Harry Maguire and swept the ball into the roof of the net.
Out of touch Man United scored once again through James’ powerful strike in the 57th minute. It was Fernandes who sealed United’s win with a 74th-minute penalty.
Joe Willock tripped Rashford after he bedazzled the Newcastle player with sublime close control in the area, and the Portuguese mid fielder slotted the ball past Darlow sending the latter the other way.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar said to BT Sport, “We had to up the tempo a little bit, especially in the last third and I felt we managed to do that. It is always difficult to get going after an away game in Europe.”
“Even though we dominated possession and had a lot of the ball we couldn’t create many opportunities. I felt in the second half we found our positions better.”
