Dhoni: “New Bowling Attack Offers More Manoeuvrability” After CSK's Win vs LSG

After snapping a five-match losing streak with a win over LSG, MS Dhoni credited CSK’s revamped bowling strategy for improved performance in the powerplay. Leaving out senior players like Ashwin and Conway, CSK introduced young bowlers like Anshul Kamboj, who gave the team better control early on. Dhoni highlighted the need for adaptability and hinted that playing on better batting surfaces outside Chennai might help their batting unit express itself more freely.

Dhoni Praises Young Bowlers After CSK Breaks Losing Streak Against LSG

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) snapped their five-match losing streak in IPL 2025 with a five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), thanks to a revamped bowling strategy that stand-in captain MS Dhoni said brought greater balance and flexibility to the side.

Following a string of disappointing performances, CSK made bold selection calls by benching seasoned campaigners R. Ashwin and Devon Conway. In their place, the team introduced younger talents such as 24-year-old Anshul Kamboj and handed powerplay responsibilities to Khaleel Ahmed. The move paid off, with the duo conceding just 42 runs and picking up two key wickets in the first six overs.

"We needed to strengthen our bowling during the powerplay. There was too much pressure on Ashwin to deliver on pitches that weren’t offering much," Dhoni said during the post-match presentation. "The new combination gives the captain more flexibility, especially when things don't go as planned."

The former CSK skipper praised the variety offered by the revamped bowling unit, which included Noor Ahmad, who provided backup spin options if required. He also noted that the team now has the resources to better manage early overs and adapt quickly.

Batting woes have been a recurring issue for CSK this season, especially during the powerplay. Dhoni had earlier expressed concerns after a subpar total against Kolkata Knight Riders, where the team managed only 103/9. However, Monday’s match showed progress, with new openers Shaik Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra posting 52 runs in just 29 deliveries, setting a strong foundation.

Reflecting on CSK’s batting struggles, Dhoni pointed to the slower pitches in Chennai as a contributing factor. "We’ve played more games at Chepauk this season, and the surface hasn’t been very helpful for stroke-making," he said. "The players feel more confident batting on quicker, truer tracks."

He emphasized the importance of intent and decision-making in such conditions. "It’s about knowing your release shot and trusting yourself to play it. While you must be cautious, timid cricket won’t take you far either."

The tactical shake-up and renewed energy seemed to rejuvenate the squad, though CSK remains at the bottom of the IPL 2025 standings. With several games still to go, the franchise will be hoping this win marks a turning point in their season.
