Introduced on 25 April, 2008, the Orange Cap is presented to the leading run scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was introduced a week after the start of the inaugural season of the IPL. The batsman with most runs in the tournament during the course of the season would wear the Orange Cap while fielding.
The overall leading run-scorer at the conclusion of the tournament winning the actual Orange Cap award on the day of the season’s final. Brendon McCullum became the first player to wear the Orange Cap, and Shaun Marsh became the first winner of the award.
Shaun Marsh was awarded the first ever IPL Orange Cap in the inaugural season of the IPL. With 616 runs under his belt, Marsh represented Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab – former name).
The demolishing Australian opening batsman Matthew Hayden received the Orange Cap in 2009. With 572 runs playing for Chennai Super Kings, he was the leading run scorer.
Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian batting legend was awarded the Orange Cap in the third season of the IPL. He scored 618 runs playing for Mumbai Indians.
The Caribbean Calypso, Chris Gayle was the leading run scorer in 2011. With 608 runs he got the Orange Cap. He played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011.
The Universe Boss, Chris Gayle became the first player in IPL to receive the Orange Cap in two consecutive seasons. He bettered his 2011 individual runs in 2012 where he scored 733 runs for RCB.
Michael Hussey, Australia’s Mr. Dependable, played for Chennai Super Kings in 2013. He scored 733 runs and won the Orange Cap award.
Robin Uthappa, two-time IPL winner with Kolkata Knight Riders received the Orange Cap in 2014. He amassed 660 runs for KKR.
The Australian pocket monster, David Warner became the leading run scorer in 2015. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and scored 562 runs in 2015.
Virat Kohli, the run machine was awarded the Orange Cap in 2016. He scored 973 runs for RCB and was the leading run scorer.
David Warner, became the second player after Chris Gayle to bag the Orange Cap for two times (not consecutive). He scored 641 runs in 2017 for SRH.
The New Zealand professor, Kane Williamson has been a vital cog for SRH ever since he joined the team. He scored 735 runs and got the Orange Cap.
David Warner, yet again got the Orange Cap in 2019 and became the first player to win the award for three times. He scored 692 runs for SRH in the season.
KL Rahul, the Indian bagged the Orange Cap in the last season of IPL. He scored 670 runs for KXIP. In 2020 IPL was held in Dubai.
