Ramesh Powar, a former India offspinner, has been appointed head coach of the senior India Women’s team by the BCCI.
A three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprised of Sulakshana Naik, Madan Lal, and RP Singh finalised Powar’s candidacy and recommended it to the board.
The committee received 35 applications for the position, with six candidates being shortlisted and three candidates being interviewed on Wednesday.
WV Raman, the current coach, was an automatic inclusion in the shortlist after leading the team to the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia last year.
Raman had taken over for Powar in December 2018 after a contentious five-month tenure for the Mumbaikar. It included a public spat with veteran cricketer Mithali Raj during the Caribbean T20 WC.
Powar represented India in two Tests and 31 One-Day Internationals.
He began coaching cricket after his playing career and is an ECB Level 2 accredit coach who has also completes the BCCI-NCA Level 2 coaching course.
He was recently the head coach of a dominant Mumbai team that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The tour of England will be his first assignment since returning to the helm of the women’s squad.
In England, the Indian women’s team will play one Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is.
The squad will travel with the men’s team on June 2. The first of seven games, a one-off Test match, will begin on June 16 in Bristol.
The BCCI’s next move is to choose the squads now that the coach issue has been resolved.
ECB requests BCCI to keep the size of squad small
The selection meeting is suppose to take place sooner rather than later,’ but the selectors are yet to be inform the date.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has demanded that the BCCI keep the women’s contingent limited, according to media source.
According to reports, the request is to keep the number under 30, which includes members of the support staff.
The request appears to be in response to bio-security concerns raised throughout the series.
