IPL: Gill and Sudharsan broke many records, three teams in playoffs but fighting for fourth place

In a historic IPL 2025 match, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill chased 200 runs without losing a wicket—setting a tournament record. Their unbeaten 200-run stand helped Gujarat Titans crush Delhi Capitals and book a playoff spot, while Delhi now fights for survival against Mumbai.

Gill and Sudharsan broke many records

Last night in IPL, a surprising feat happened, which was seen for the first time in the history of this tournament.

This feat was accomplished on the soil of the capital Delhi by two explosive cricketers of Team India.

Gujarat Titans team was in front of Delhi Capitals.

The scoreboard read 200 and Gujarat captain Shubman Gill and explosive batsman Sai Sudarshan came out to chase the target.

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel led the bowling attack but Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan were in a different mode.

From the very first over, both of them kept hitting fours and sixes intermittently and maintained the run rate between 9 to 10.

On the pitch, both these cricketers were displaying their technique as well as power hitting very well.

Both batsmen were playing all the cricket shots like hook, pull, sweep, drive, cover drive, square drive, straight drive with ease.

Long on, long off, mid wicket, fine leg, deep backward point – the ball that came off his bat at every possible place would quickly cross the boundary.

The team scored 50 runs in just 5 overs, completed a century partnership in the 11th over and won by 10 wickets by hitting a six on the last ball of the 19th over. Sai Sudarshan scored an unbeaten 108 and Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 93.

After this match, the three teams reaching the playoffs have been decided, these teams are - Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings.

Sai-Gil's record breaking performance

With this victory, the feat that was seen for the first time in IPL happened.

During the run chase, Sai Sudarshan and Shubman Gill made an unbeaten partnership of 200 runs.

This is the first time in the history of the tournament that a team has achieved the target of 200 runs without losing any wicket.

Earlier this record was in the name of Kolkata Knight Riders, who had achieved the target of 184 runs without losing any wicket against Gujarat Lions in 2017.

In the month of May last year, the pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan had shared a 210-run partnership for the first wicket. Both of them had scored centuries then.

Even a month ago, when these two teams clashed in Ahmedabad, Delhi Capitals scored 203 runs, but Gujarat registered an easy 7-wicket win thanks to Jos Buttler's unbeaten 97 runs.

By achieving a target of more than 200 runs last night, Gujarat achieved the feat of achieving such a target twice against a single team (Delhi Capitals) in the same season of IPL.

In cricket, the performance of the opening pair matters a lot. A good start usually leads to victory.

That is why many pairs like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer have been very famous.

Even in the IPL, pairs like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, Du Plessis and Virat Kohli, Devon Conway and Rituraj Gaikwad have been scoring a lot of runs on the pitch.

Now Shubhaman Gill and Sai Sudarshan have emerged as the new pair that has registered their name in the history of IPL.

This is the second double century partnership of this opening pair which is a record in IPL.

The Gill-Sudarshan pair has now become the pair scoring the most runs in one IPL season.

Both of them have scored 839 runs together so far in IPL 2025. They broke the record set by Shikhar Dhawan-Prithvi Shaw (744 runs) in 2021.

Gill and Sai Sudharsan made a century partnership for the 7th time in IPL. Only two pairs, Kohli-De Villiers (10 times) and Kohli-Gayle (9 times), have made more century partnerships than them.

What did Sai Sudarshan, Shubman Gill say?

T20 cricket, especially IPL, is dominated by aggressive batsmen who hit big shots to score big. But Sai Sudarshan says that the mantra of his success is to keep changing his batting on the pitch according to the situation of the match.

Sai Sudarshan, who was chosen as the 'Player of the Match', said, "In the previous matches, I took risks which did not work. Although I have not made much changes in my batting, but mentally I am playing much more freely now."

Captain Shubman Gill said about Sai Sudarshan, "This is what happens when you are in form. You want to play according to the situation of the match and your form helps in that."

Their team's assistant coach Parthiv Patel says, "We talk about the more risk you take in T20 cricket, the bigger the reward. But these two players have changed its definition. They have batted brilliantly throughout this season. They don't take that much risk but they have an amazing ability to hit boundaries and hit the ball with power. They know their game."

Sudarshan says that making the team win has increased his confidence.

He says, "Taking the match forward with my batting and winning the match has increased my confidence in myself. I am working harder on my batting, I am taking a little more freedom mentally and scoring runs with the bat."

However, Sai Sudarshan himself says that he will have to work harder against spin bowling.

Orange Cap goes to Sai Sudarshan

Currently, Sai has once again regained the Orange Cap, which was snatched by Yashasvi Jaiswal from Suryakumar Yadav by a margin of just 13 runs after scoring a half-century in the first match of the day.

Then Sai Sudarshan slipped to third place with 509 runs. But last night Sai Sudarshan was seen in a completely different style.

He scored an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls to regain the Orange Cap, taking his tally from 509 to 617 runs in one go.

However, their captain Shubman Gill also played an unbeaten innings of 97 runs and has reached the second position in the Orange Cap race by just 16 runs.

On the other hand, in bowling, Prasidh Krishna has once again won the Purple Cap. He took the important wicket of Delhi captain Akshar Patel in this match and his total number of wickets has become 21.

'Delhi' is dependent on Rahul

Although Gujarat won due to its openers, KL Rahul was the captain of the challenge of 200 runs put in front of Delhi Capitals. Rahul played an unbeaten innings of 112 runs in just 65 balls. This is KL Rahul's first century (overall fifth in IPL) not only in this season but also for Delhi Capitals.

With this century, he has made a special record in IPL. He has become the first cricketer in IPL who has scored a century for three different teams.

Before Delhi Capitals, KL Rahul has scored two centuries each for Punjab Kings (2019, 2020) and Lucknow Super Giants (2022).

This season, Rahul has scored 493 runs at an average of 61.63. He is the highest run scorer for Delhi Capitals. Apart from this century, he has also played three half-century innings.

It seems that the responsibility of playing a big innings for the team is on his shoulders. No other batsman from DC has even touched the 300 run mark this season.

This is the reason why despite winning the first four consecutive matches, this team is struggling to reach the playoffs.

Now the Delhi Capitals team will face Mumbai Indians on Wednesday. If Akshar's team has to reach the playoffs, then they will have to win at Wankhede.

The battle for the playoffs

After Sunday's matches the playoff situation has become somewhat clear

After Gujarat Titans' victory over Delhi Capitals, three teams i.e. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans have confirmed their place in the playoffs.

Now the whole fight is for the fourth place.

Delhi and Mumbai teams also had a chance but both are playing their next match against each other, due to which only one of the two teams is likely to reach the playoffs.

Lucknow also has a chance to reach the fourth position but for this the team will have to perform exceptionally well. That is, it will have to win all the upcoming matches and improve its net run rate.

After that Lucknow will have to hope that Mumbai beats Delhi and Punjab beats Mumbai. This is a very complicated equation.

On the other hand, the path is clear for Mumbai: Beat Delhi and get fourth place.
