Silver success: Jyothi Yarraji and Jeswin Aldrin at the Asian Indoor Athletics C’ships

Published Date:

Jyothi Yarraji and Jeswin Aldrin of India continued their streak of breaking national records by winning silver medals in the men’s long jump and women’s 60-meter hurdles events, respectively, at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 on Sunday, February 12.

Jyothi Yarraji beat her previous record by 0.03 seconds as she finished the race in 8.13 seconds. Yarraji, who also holds the U.S. record for the outdoor women’s 100-meter hurdles, won Saturday’s qualifier with a time of 8.16 seconds.

But in the final, Masumi Aoki of Japan, who had just just qualified after clocking 8.51s to place eighth in the qualifier, sprinted to victory and won the gold in just 8.01s. China’s Chen Jiamin finished third in 8.15 seconds.

Jyothi Yarraji had now broken the women’s 60m hurdles national record for India five times since January.

Jeswin Aldrin broke the national indoor record in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.97 metres, earning silver for India. He broke his own personal best, which he had established on Friday during the qualification round, according to an olympics.com article.

On his second effort, Jeswin Aldrin leapt a remarkable 7.97 metres, giving him the early advantage in the competition. Aldrin, however, fouled on his last three attempts, allowing Lin Yu Tang of Chinese Taipei to win the race with an effort of 8.02m. The Indian athlete had to settle for silver after Aldrin’s final attempt, where he leaped 7.82 feet.

Shaili Singh, who won silver at the U20 world championships in the women’s long jump, came in fifth place with a best leap of 6.27 metres on her third attempt. Darya Reznichenko of Uzbekistan won bronze with a leap of 6.37 metres.

Abhinaya Shetty, a woman high jumper, placed seventh in the eight-woman final with a best jump of 1.75 metres.

Later on in the day, Siva Subramani, the holder of the men’s pole vault national record for India, cleared 5.15m on his second attempt but was unable to go higher. Prashant Kanhiya failed to clear his first challenge of 4.80m and finished with NM (no mark). Sarvesh Anil Kushare, a high jumper, placed sixth in the final with a leap of 2.20 metres.

India finished the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 with eight medals, including one gold, six silvers, and one bronze, after winning two medals on the final day of competition. Tajinderpal Singh Toor took home the solitary gold medal for India in the men’s shot put event.
