India’s biggest domestic league, Indian Premier League (IPL), has not only benefitted the BCCI but also the players. The salaries of IPL players have grown exponentially over the years. Cricket superstars such as MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli are among the highest earning players in terms of the league.
For the past 13 seasons, Virat Kohli has been playing for RCB. In IPL’s inaugural season of 2008, Virat was sold to RCB for Rs 12 Lakh. Today, he is the highest earner from IPL with a salary of Rs 17 Crore every season.
Post the 2007 T20 World Cup win, MS Dhoni was the most popular and sought after player in the IPL 2008 auction. Chennai Super Kings bought him for Rs 6 Crore. Since then, the team under his captaincy has won the trophy three times. Today, he earns about Rs 15 Crore per season.
In 2008, the Deccan Chargers bought Rohit Sharma for Rs 3 Crores. 3 years later, Mumbai Indians took him on and Sharma has brought the trophy home five times as captain of MI. Today, he earns 15 Crores per season.
