Who is the best Indian ODI Captain? Dhoni, Ganguly or Kohli

Published Date:

BCCI has decided to appoint Rohit Sharma as the successor of Virat Kohli in the white ball Cricket as he is the newest full time ODI skipper of the Indian Cricket Team.

Rohit Sharma took over the T20 captaincy following the T20 World Cup after Virat Kohli stepped out as the T20 skipper.

BCCI thought it is better to have a single white ball skipper rather than two and create ruckus in the team.

The decision was the end of Virat Kohli’s current stint as the white ball skipper, while he continue to lead Team India in the longest format of the game.

This does raise the question about who has been the best ODI skipper for Team India over the long march of time.

Here are the best Indian ODI Captains:

1) MS Dhoni

The sole reason, MS Dhoni is above everyone in the list is because he has achieved everything and is the only person in the cricketing history to do so.

He has won all three major Trophies, The ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and The ICC T20 Cricket World Cup.

He even lead Team India to become number 1 test team and is the only person to lead Men in Blue in 200 ODI matches with a winning average of 59.52%.

2) Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is undoubtedly the most successful ODI Captain for Team India in terms of Wins and losses.

He is the only ODI skipper to have Captained Team India in over 90 matches and have an winning average of 70.43%.

The only blot on the bright stint and career of Virat Kohli is his faliure to not win any major trophy during his time as the captain.

3) Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is one of the most iconic Indian Captain. It is said that he was the one that taught Team India to fight and win on the foreign soil.

Team India won the 2002 Champion’s Trophy under Sourav Ganguly along with the Natwest Trophy.

Men in Blue’s victory over England at Lords following by the T-Shirt swing by Dada is still one of the most Iconic moment in Indian history. He has a splendid win percentage of 53.90 in ODIs.

4) Mohammad Azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin held the record for most wins and matches as an ODI Skipper for Team India until surpassed by none other than MS Dhoni.

Team has won 90 ODI matches under the Mohammad Azharuddin. He was the ODI Skipper for a record 174 matches.

Mohammad Azharuddin has an amazing win percentage of 54.16 in ODIs.

All Indian Skippers had their amazing and iconic moments during their stint.

Rohit Sharma is the newest successor for the White ball cricket and hopefully he will have a great successful run.
