Catches win matches! While there have been some exceptional catches in the tournament, Adelaide Strikers’ Tahlia McGrath and Maddy Penna produced an incredible catch that will go down as one of the best catches in Women’s Big Bash League history.
With the increasing physicality in the sport, fitness is being considered as the most important aspect of the game. However, presence of mind is also required besides fitness. And that is what Strikers’ Tahlia McGrath and Maddy Penna reflected in their match on Saturday.
Chasing 153, Brisbane Heat could salvage 135, hence conceding the match by 17 runs. Strikers’ spinner Amanda Wellington bowled a loopy full toss to Heat’s Amelia Kerr, who mistimed the shot that was headed towards Penna at mid-wicket. Penna couldn’t hold on to the catch. However, McGrath anticipated and ran behind Penna to be in a position to pocket the catch as she timed her dive to perfection.
The brilliant piece of fielding turned out to be the crucial turning point of the match. While Wellington returned with 2 wickets, Megan Schutt, Darci Brown and Sarah Coyte bagged 1 wicket apiece.
For Adelaide Katie Mack and Wolvaardt scored 50 and 46 respectively to give them a competitive total. Chasing 153, Brisbane’s Georgia Redmayne was the only one to stand apart with 65.
