Apple’s revolutionary new technology: Glucose monitoring without pricking skin

Published Date:

Currently, measuring blood sugar levels is a difficult and time-consuming process that requires pricking a needle to collect blood and checking the glucose level in a laboratory. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that a large proportion of the world’s population is dealing with issues such as high blood sugar, diabetes, and others.

Apple is developing revolutionary technology that will allow its watch to monitor glucose levels in a noninvasive manner. Known as ‘Blood glucose monitoring technology,’ it will assist the wearer in monitoring diabetes and blood glucose levels without the need to prick the skin as of now.

Apple is working on a silicon photonics chip that will use optical absorption spectroscopy to shine light from a laser under the skin to determine the glucose concentration in the body. It is now a ‘Proof-of-Concept,’ but it will take a lot of work to become a possible reality and be bit on a wearer’s hand.

Apple Watch: Various Uses

Smartwatches have become an important device in today’s society due to their numerous applications such as monitoring heart rate, pulses, blood oxygen levels, and more.

A dangerous underlying ailment could be indicated by exceptionally high or low heart rates, which Apple Watch monitors for in the background. This might aid in pointing out circumstances that might call for additional investigation for you and your patients.

The user will be alerted if a patient’s heart rate is above 120 or below 40 while they appear to have been inactive for 10 minutes. Patients can change the threshold bpm or enable or disable these notifications. On an iPhone, the Health app allows users to display all heart rate notifications as well as time, date, and heart rate.

Periodically, the irregular rhythm notification looks for indications of abnormal rhythms that might be indicative of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Although not all cases of AFib will be picked up by this function, it might pick up on something that can give your patients a heads-up that more testing might be necessary.
