Best phones under 20,000 (Jan 2023): A guide to affordable 5G connectivity

Published Date:

Smartphones powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chip occupied 60% of the positions in our previous sub-20K phone ranking. As evidence of how well-liked that 5G-ready SoC is among phone manufacturers in this market, this figure has increased to 100% this month. All of the phones on this list also include 128 GB of internal storage and 6 GB of RAM. While the processing power of the various handsets on this list is comparable, they all have a different set of functions.

We have phones with 108MP cameras, one of which even has optical image stabilisation (OIS), a feature that is quite difficult to obtain in this price range. Additional features include rapid charging, 5G compatibility, high refresh rate LCD or AMOLED panels, and more.

The best smartphones in India under 20,000 rupees

Motorola G82 5G

Our top pick in this category for this month is the Motorola G82 5G. It boasts some capabilities that are currently almost impossible to obtain all in one smartphone priced around Rs 20,000. It has a 6.6-inch, 10-bit, 120 Hz refresh rate, Full HD+ pOLED display that can display more than a billion different colour shades. Its 50MP primary camera’s provision of optical image stabilisation (OIS) is another rarity in this market.

The supporting cast comprises of a 16MP selfie camera up front, an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2MP macro camera on the back. The phone’s design is rather svelte, and its IP52 classification for water and dust protection gives it some extra durability. The Motorola G82 5G comes with a 33W fast charger and a 5000 mAh battery that can power it through over a day and a half of moderate use. Like most Motorola phones, this one runs Android 12 and has a largely stock user interface.

In India, the Motorola G82 5G costs Rs 18,999 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Poco X4 Pro 5G

Thanks to a good balance of features and performance and a new, lower price, the Poco X4 Pro 5G holds its spot on our list without a struggle. The second smartphone on Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 sports a 6.67-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED screen with a peak brightness of 1200 nits and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is a layer that covers the screen to prevent scuffs. In a punch-hole at the top of the screen, there is a 16MP camera.

The Poco X4 Pro 5G boasts three cameras on the rear, including a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The battery life of this phone, which is 5000 mAh, is over a day and a half with moderate use. However, this 67W charger is speedier and claims to charge the device from 0% to 100% in under 45 minutes. The phone is powered by MIUI 13 on top of Android 11. Update for Android 12 is anticipated soon.

In India, the Poco X4 Pro 5G costs Rs 16,499 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G

The Redmi Note 11 Pro + 5G and Poco X4 Pro 5G are comparable in many aspects, but the Redmi Note 11 Pro + 5G has a better camera. Photography buffs will be intrigued by its 108MP primary camera. A 2MP macro camera and an 8MP ultrawide camera are included. For selfies and video calls, the 16MP front camera is adequate. This Xiaomi phone also debuted with Android 11 and MIUI 13, and the Android 12 update began to go out in the latter part of the previous year.

Like the Poco above, the remaining specifications are similar. You receive a 6.67-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED screen with a maximum brightness of 1200 nits and support for a refresh rate of 120 Hz for fluid scrolling in apps that are compatible.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5 serves as a layer of scratch defence. With moderate use, its 5000 mAh battery lasts for about a day and a half, and the included 67W turbo charger promises to charge it completely in just 45 minutes.

Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G costs Rs 19,999 in India for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Realme 10 Pro 5G

Another smartphone with a 108MP camera on our list is the relatively new Realme 10 Pro 5G. Since the secondary camera only has a 2MP depth sensor to work with, it must perform all the heavy lifting. There is a 16MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

Since it is the same for all the phones on our list, you already know how much RAM and storage it has as well as the chipset that drives it. But what sets it apart from the others is that it is the only phone in this group to come pre-installed with Android 13. Realme UI 4.0 is added on top.

The 6.72-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD screen of the Realme 10 Pro 5G has thin bezels and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The phone’s design is also pretty appealing and incorporates some elements from Apple. A 5000 mAh battery provides similar battery backup to other phones on this list, powering it through an average day and a half of use.

The manufacturer includes a 33W SuperVOOC charger that can recharge 50% of the battery in under 30 minutes.

In India, the Realme 10 Pro 5G costs Rs 18,999 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

iQOO Z6 5G

For a while, the iQOO Z5 5G held the position as our top pick in this category. Unfortunately, it is no longer accessible. Although the iQOO Z6, its rumoured successor, isn’t as powerful as the Z5, it is still a good alternative within this price range. A Snapdragon 695 has taken the role of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC, but it is also substantially less expensive. The 6.58-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD screen on this phone has a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

With moderate use, the battery’s 5000 mAh capacity lasts for 1.5 days. A 50MP primary camera handles the most of the photography. The numbers are made up of a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro camera. However, you also get a fantastic 16MP selfie camera. The iQOO Z6 5G runs FunTouch UI 12 on top of Android 12. Without a doubt, we would choose the Z5 5G over the Z6 5G if you can locate one in this price range.
