Starting with the upcoming quarter, certain divisions at Google are requesting that its employees share desks with their coworkers. According to reports, the business is considering closing certain offices. According to a recent report by CNBC, Google has ordered its cloud employees to share desk space.
The company is taking these actions so that it “can continue to invest in Cloud’s growth,” according to a recent internal FAQ shared with cloud employees that CNBC was able to access. According to the CNBC report, the Search Giant has asked its employees based in US offices in Kirkland, Washington, New York City; San Francisco, Seattle, and Sunnyvale, California. Some structures will be abandoned, according to the paperwork.
The internal memo stated, “Most Googlers will now share a workstation with one other Googler. To ensure a positive experience in the new shared space, “during the matching process, they will agree on a basic desk layout and establish conventions with their desk mate and teams.” In order to avoid having the same staff at the same desk on the same day, the memo also requests that employees arrive on different days.
According to the article, Google has unveiled a brand-new method of working that blends on-site and remote labour. This new method of working is known as “Cloud Office Evolution” or “CLOE.” The business believes that by using the new desk-sharing model, they will be able to use their space more effectively.
With the flexibility to work from home or in the office as fits them best, Google believes this new way of doing business will improve employee collaboration. They also anticipate that this new method of working will enable them to make better use of their workplace space.
A Google representative responded to the accusations by telling the newspaper, “Since coming back to work, we’ve done pilots and surveyed Cloud employees to explore various hybrid work models and help define the best experience. According to our research, Cloud Googlers value the opportunity to work remotely a few days a week as well as guaranteed in-person communication when they are in the office. With this feedback, we’ve developed our new rotating model, combining the best of pre-pandemic collaboration with the freedom and focus we’ve all learned to value from remote work, while also allowing us to use our spaces more efficiently.”
