Google doodle is celebrating the life and legacy of Otto Wichterle. He was a Czech chemist who is known for inventing the soft contact lens.

Wichterle was born on this day in 1913 in Prostejov, the Czech Republic.

He was a curious learner since his childhood, Wichterle earned his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1936 from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT).

There he taught as a professor during the 1950s. Meanwhile, he is known to have developed an absorbent and transparent gel for eye implants.

But he is more popular as the inventor of contact lenses. Not only this, but his innovations also laid the foundation for state-of-the-art medical technologies like smart biomaterials.

We all know that these biomaterials are used to restore human connective tissues as they include heart valves, polymers and ceramics among others.

Happy 108th birthday to Otto Wichterle who will always be remembered for his revolutionary invention- the soft contact lens.
