According to CloudSEK, fraudsters are utilising ChatGPT’s popularity to disseminate malware via Facebook adverts by stealing Facebook accounts. CloudSEK’s investigation turned up 13 Facebook pages with over 500,000 followers, some of which were stolen as early as February of this year and are now being exploited to spread malware via Facebook advertisements.
“Cybercriminals are capitalising on the popularity of ChatGPT, exploiting Facebook’s vast user base by compromising legitimate Facebook accounts to distribute malware via Facebook ads, putting users’ security at risk,” CloudSEK’s cyber intelligence expert Bablu Kumar said. Our investigation uncovered 13 compromised pages with over 500k followers, some of which were hijacked as recently as February 2023. We warn users to remain wary of such fraudulent activity on the network.”
CloudSEK has also detected at least 25 websites imitating OpenAI.com, which are malicious sites that lure visitors into downloading and installing destructive software that endangers their security and privacy.
The malware not only has the ability to steal sensitive data such as personally identifiable information (PII), system information, and credit card details from the user’s device, but it also has the ability to replicate and spread across systems via removable media. It poses a serious concern because of its capacity to elevate privileges and consistently remain on the system.
