A system that will automatically update important government papers using Aadhaar is apparently under the control of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY). Before the final system is released, the development is reportedly still in the conceptualization phase’s basic stages. The government, according to The Economic Times, intends to create a system that will enable individuals to change details like home addresses on important documents (including driver’s licences, ration cards, and voter ID cards) without having to go to particular agencies or ministries. Every time a citizen upgrades their Aadhaar card, the auto-updates will take place.
While other Aadhaar information, such as the date of birth, gender, mobile number, and email address, may only be updated offline through centres, the home address can be updated online.
How does Aadhaar-based auto-update function?
According to the report, individuals who save important government papers on DigiLocker will benefit the most from the system. DigiLocker allows users to digitally store various documents, including licences, PAN cards, and more, and can be very helpful during KYC procedures, which are now routinely carried out by many online and offline venues.
Hence, based on a “consent framework,” changes made to the Aadhar card (for the time being, demographic changes like changing your address) will be translated across other papers on DigiLocker. It implies that DigiLocker has the option to decide whether to use the auto-update service.
According to a representative, “Citizens updating their addresses on Aadhaar will be prompted to choose whether they want their information automatically updated in the records of other ministries if, for example, we get ten ministries on board. If they only want two of the 10 ministries to have the address updated, they can checkmark those two in the dropdown box, and the address will be updated without invading their privacy.”
MeitY appears to only be collaborating with a small number of ministries at the moment, including Panchayati Raj, rural development, and transport. Later, it might include other agencies to allow users to automatically update passports and other documents. For the auto-update period, the ministry will provide software APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).
Advantages of auto-update systems
According to a government official, updating DigiLocker documents automatically using Aadhaar will primarily “save departments time and costs, and eradicate the scourge of fraudulent documents.”
Also, it will help people who move around a lot because of their employment. Importantly, at the presentation of the Union Budget last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed the creation of a comparable system.
