Smartphones from Samsung’s “Ultra” series have zooming capabilities. The most recent handset featuring space zoom is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung Galaxy space zoom photographs, according to an examination by a Reddit user, are phoney.
“Many of us have seen the stunning moon images captured by the most recent zoom lenses, beginning with the S20 Ultra. But, I’ve always been unsure of their veracity because they seem almost too flawless. These pictures aren’t necessarily fake, but they’re also not quite real either. Let me clarify,” commented ibreakphotos, a Reddit member, in a post.
According to the user, he shrunk a high-resolution image of the moon from the internet to 170×170 pixels. He then used a gaussian blur to eliminate all details. He proceeded to the opposite end of the room, shut out all the lights, and full-screened the image on a monitor, blurring it to 170×170 pixels. He eventually used Samsung’s space zoom to get an image of the moon.
Samsung is using an AI model to add craters and other characteristics to locations that were before simply a fuzzy mess, the user writes in the post.
I must emphasise that there is a difference between extra processing like super-resolution, where multiple frames are combined to recover detail that would otherwise be lost, and this, where an AI model is trained on a set of moon images in order to recognise the moon and overlay the moon texture on it (when there is no detail to recover in the first place, as in this experiment). As you zoom into something else, several exposures and other data from each frame are taken into account, but this processing is not the same as that. He continues, “This is unique to the moon.
Deciding that ‘moon photographs from Samsung are false’, the user says that ‘Samsung’s marketing is dishonest’. As optics cannot resolve the level of detail you see, AI is mostly responsible for this work. It is quite simple to train your model on other moon photos because the moon is tidally locked to the Earth. Therefore, when a moon-like object is found, you can simply apply that texture.
