The government laid down rules for social media platforms, digital media and Over-The-Top (OTT) on Thursday.
This has now introduced a wave of new changes for streaming services in India. The move comes to assert more control over powerful big tech firms.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also said that social media companies are welcome to do business in India. But they should not play double standards. The new OTT rules come into effect after the Red Fort violence had rattled Delhi.
Social media platforms will disclose the details of the first instigator of the contentious post.
The government has issued a Code of Ethics and a three-tier grievance redressal framework for news sites and OTT platforms. The rules will empower users of social media, said Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Moreover, the companies will have a chief compliance officer, Nodal Contact person. And a Resident Grievance officer will also be there.
Key highlights of the new OTT rules:
-Digital Media will also follow Press Council Code.
-A 3-stair mechanism for OTT platforms. OTT and digital news media will have to disclose their details.
-Furthermore, registration not mandatory, the government is just seeking information.
