The latest full-frame mirrorless hybrid cameras from Panasonic, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX, are designed with a focus on video recording capabilities.
These are the first cameras from the firm to use phase detection autofocus (PDAF), which replaces the venerable contrast detection-based DFD (depth from defocusing) technology. While useful for still images, this technique was frequently cumbersome and unreliable for moving images, and it resulted in persistent pulsing in the out of focus areas.
The 24.2MP 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor in the S5II and S5II’s totally redesigned focusing system solves this. With 779 AF points, the innovative Phase Hybrid Auto-Focus system combines contrast detection and PDAF algorithms to continuously monitor people and animals.

Similar video recording performance to the S1H is achievable with the S5II and S5II. You can choose between recording in 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 or 6K 10-bit 4:2:0. Continuous 4K recording without overheating is possible thanks to a revolutionary heat dispersion technique with an integrated fan and heat sink.
The cameras feature real-time LUTs for in-camera colour grading and have a stated dynamic range of 14+ stops with V-Log/V-Gamut. You may upload your LUTs straight to the camera.
Both the S5II and S5II include a new image stabilisation technology that consists of a 2-axis lens-based OIS and a 5-axis body IS. There is also an Active IS mode for video, which uses the camera shake status to determine how best to balance the horizontal, vertical, and rotational correction ratios.
Other features include dual native ISO, a 3.0-inch fully articulating 1840K dot touchscreen, a 3680K dot OLED viewfinder, a 30fps AFS/AFC burst mode with an electronic shutter, 48kHz/24-bit internal microphone recording, a splash- and dust-resistant magnesium alloy diecast body, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. There is also a full-sized HDMI port.
The S5IIX and S5II are equivalent devices, although the latter supports all-intra and ProRes recording on SSD, as well as wired and wireless streaming for live streaming and USB tethering.
This month, the $2000 Panasonic LUMIX S5II will be made available. Priced at $2200, the S5IIX will go on sale in May 2023.
