At its global launch event, Qualcomm launched its two new chipsets – the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoCs. The successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will be the new default flagship processor for several Android devices. Meanwhile, the new mid-range processor, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 featuring a dedicated AI engine succeeds the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G and will be option. The newly-launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 offers 10% faster CPU and GPU performance. It also provides 30% improved power efficiency. Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1: Availability
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC will be featured in many flagship smartphones such as Xiaomi 12 Ultra, Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition, Motorola Frontier, Samsung Z Flip 4, Samsung Z Fold 4, OnePlus 10 Ultra and iQOO 10 Pro.
The Xiaomi 12 Ultra would reportedly be the first smartphone to debut with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 this year. Smartphones from ASUS ROG, Black Shark, HONOR, Nubia, OPPO, RedMagic, Vivo and ZTE will also reportedly come with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the third quarter of this year.
On the other hand, the mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is expected to hit the market in the second quarter of 2022. The OPPO Reno 8 series, which will make its debut in China next week, will get the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1: Features
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 offers 10% faster CPU and GPU performance and a 30% improvement in CPU and GPU power efficiency. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1’s high-end Cortex-X2 core is clocked at up to 3.2GHz, compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s 3.0GHz. A Snapdragon X65 5G modem provides 10GB per second peak download speed. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 offers up to 3200MHz LPDDR5 storage and Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 technology.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1’s Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor supports up to 200 MP configuration with 8K video recording at 30fps and 4K video recording at 120fps. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 offers HDR10+, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision for video and Qualcomm Aqstic and Qualcomm aptX for audio.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1: Features
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 4nm processor gets a dedicated AI engine, Adreno 662 GPU and Kryo CPU cluster clocked at up to 2.4GHz. It is said to deliver 20% faster graphics and 30% faster AI task performance as compared to the Snapdragon 778G.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1’s Adreno Frame Motion Engine offers twice the frame rates with the same power consumption as the Snapdragon 778G. Similar to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 also includes a Snapdragon X62 5G modem but with a maximum download speed of up to 4.4 GB per second.
It also gets a Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor supporting up to 200MP photo capture and 4K HDR video recording. For audio, it offers with Qualcomm aptX technology and Snapdragon Sound technology. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 features Android SE and Trusted Management Engine, promising additional security for digital wallets.
