What caused WhatsApp to ban over 29 lakh Indian accounts in January 2023?

Published Date:

WhatsApp makes available a report on user safety. The report includes information such as the amount of accounts the platform banned the next month, customer complaints, and more. More over 29 lakh Indian accounts were blocked from WhatsApp in January 2023, according to the user safety report recently provided by the meta-owned network.

Regulation 4(1)(d) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which prohibits certain user accounts, has been applied to WhatsApp. According to the most recent statistics from the instant messaging service, approximately 2,918,000 Indian users’ accounts were banned by WhatsApp between January 1 and January 31, 2023.

The accounts were blocked after complaints from users in India were received. Using its processes for prevention and detection of violations of the Terms of Service or Indian law, WhatsApp took action against these accounts. According to the research, WhatsApp has proactively blocked almost 1,038,000 of the 2,918,000 banned accounts before receiving any user complaints.

According to the data included in the report, WhatsApp, which has the most users in the nation, got 1461 reports of complaints. 1337 appeals for bans were made out of those, but only 191 of them were given attention by WhatsApp. The site also got 7 safety-related reports, but nothing was done in response to them.

WhatsApp commented on the suspension of thousands of accounts in India, “In terms of preventing and addressing abuse, we are a market leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging platforms. We employ a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and specialists in law enforcement, online safety, and technology advances to oversee these activities in addition to our safety measures and controls.” According to the business, it uses tools and resources to stop detrimental behaviour on the network “. Users can report objectionable content and contacts to us from within the app, block contacts, and block contacts. We actively collaborate with experts in countering misinformation, advancing cybersecurity, and maintaining election integrity, and we pay great attention to user feedback.” the messaging service reported.

How to report a WhatsApp account

You can report a WhatsApp account that you believe is violating the service’s terms of service or endangering your safety by going to WhatsApp Settings > tapping Help > Contact Us.

You can send an email with your complaint or concern and an electronic signature if you want to escalate your matter to the Indian grievance officer. Remember to include your phone number in its whole, including the country code, in international format.
