WhatsApp has already rolled out UPI-enabled payment in India last November. However, the payments service never really managed to take off in terms of active users.

The transaction volume dropped from 0.81 million in December to 0.56 million in January.

With an aim to increase the user adoption, WhatsApp is now testing a payment shortcut with beta testers.

WhatsApp has begun testing a new Payment shortcut in the chat window with beta version 2.21.17.19.

The feature was previously available on expanding the chat options menu. This new change will now improve the visibility of the feature. The WhatsApp Pay shortcut is present right next to the camera and microphone buttons.

WhatsApp has not removed the dedicated Payment button yet. You can either use the new shortcut or access WhatsApp Pay from the existing menu.

Now this new placement should increase the visibility of WhatsApp Pay. And it remains to be seen if the new shortcut helps improve the user adoption of the payments service.

Moreover, as per a new report by WhatsApp tipster WABetaInfo, this may change soon.

WhatsApp will now offer an option to view Status Updates when you tap on a contact’s Profile Picture.

As per the report of WABetaInfo, there is a hidden option to view status updates on WhatsApp in the latest beta.
Since the development is in progress, it will only be out once the app decides to roll it out.
