WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature: All you need to know

WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature has finally been rolled out and a glimpse of how the new feature works was already revealed. The WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature provides a time limit of seven days before the messages get deleted automatically.

The feature works both for individual and group chats. In group chats, the group admins will be able to enable the feature in group chats.

The WhatsApp Disappearing Messages feature will be released by the Facebook-owned company to 2-billion plus users soon.

WhatsApp said the goal is “to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever”.

“That’s why we’re excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp. When the ‘disappearing messages’ feature is turned on, new messages sent to a chat will disappear after 7 days, helping the conversation feel lighter and more private,” it said in a statement.

WhatsApp announced the launch of the feature on Twitter saying, “Because not all messages need to stick around forever.”

“We’re starting with seven days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about. The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there while you need it, and then disappear after you don’t,” it explained.

The WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ will be available on Android, iOS, Linux-based KaiOS devices, WhatsApp Web and Desktop platforms by the end of this month.

How WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature works:

-The most recent selection will control the messages in the chat. “This setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat,” WhatsApp said in its support page.

-The feature will not only wipe out text messages, it will also delete photos and videos after seven days for both the parties.

-Even if you don’t open your WhatsApp during the seven day period, the messages will disappear. However, the preview of the messages might still be visible in notifications until the app is opened.

-The initial message is shown as quoted whenever you reply to a message. The quoted text might remain in the chat even after seven days if you reply to a disappearing message.

-If you forward a disappearing message to a chat with disappearing message off, the message will not disappear in the forwarded chat.

-The disappearing message will be included in the backup if you create one before a message disappears, but it will be deleted when you restore from a backup.
