WhatsApp voice and video calls feature for desktop users coming in 2021

Facebook-owned WhatsApp will add voice and video calling feature to the desktop version of the popular messaging app in 2021, a company spokesperson told Reuters.

The move to facilitate large-screen calling would equate WhatsApp with the bigwigs of video conferencing – Zoom and Google Meet. However, it is still not clear whether WhatsApp aims to compete with Zoom and Google Meet in the corporate space.

With more than 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp, unlike Zoom or Google Meet, is primarily used for personal calls.

WhatsApp announced that it has already rolled out the new feature for some desktop users on a trial basis. This move was first reported by the WA Beta Info, the tech blog.

Zoom Video Communications Inc announced on Friday that the 40-minute time limit has been removed on its free accounts for all meetings around the world for the holiday season.

Similarly, Google Meet too has told the free users to limit conversations to 60 minutes until March.
