WhatsApp’s disappearing messages feature now available to all users

Published Date:

Popular chat app WhatsApp recently announced that it is soon going to launch the disappearing messages. Well, the feature is now available on Android, iOS and web for all WhatsApp users.

The WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature provides a time limit of seven days before the messages get deleted automatically.

The feature works both for individual and group chats. In group chats, the group admins will be able to enable the feature in group chats.

WhatsApp had earlier said that the goal is “to make conversations on WhatsApp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever”.

“That’s why we’re excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on WhatsApp. When the ‘disappearing messages’ feature is turned on, new messages sent to a chat will disappear after 7 days, helping the conversation feel lighter and more private,” it had said in a statement earlier this month.

Announcing the launch of the feature on Twitter the Facebook-owned company had said, “Because not all messages need to stick around forever.”

“We’re starting with seven days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent, while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about. The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there while you need it, and then disappear after you don’t,” it explained.

How WhatsApp ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature works:

-The most recent selection will control the messages in the chat. “This setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat,” WhatsApp said in its support page.

-The feature will not only wipe out text messages, it will also delete photos and videos after seven days for both the parties.

-Even if you don’t open your WhatsApp during the seven day period, the messages will disappear. However, the preview of the messages might still be visible in notifications until the app is opened.

-The initial message is shown as quoted whenever you reply to a message. The quoted text might remain in the chat even after seven days if you reply to a disappearing message.

-If you forward a disappearing message to a chat with disappearing message off, the message will not disappear in the forwarded chat.

-The disappearing message will be included in the backup if you create one before a message disappears, but it will be deleted when you restore from a backup.

How to enable WhatsApp Disappearing messages feature:

-Open your WhatsApp chat

-Tap on the contact’s name

-Next, tap on the Disappearing Messages option

-Then tap continue

-Select the On option

How to disable WhatsApp Disappearing messages feature:

-Open your WhatsApp chat

-Tap on the contact’s name

-Then, tap on Disappearing Messages option

-Then tap continue

-Select the Off option
