Ex-boyfriend was stalking his girlfriend with this device, woman filed a case against the company
Apple AirTag was created with the intention of assisting people in tracking their belongings. Unfortunately, some users misused the gadget to stalk others without their consent rather than simply tracking their stuff. Although Apple strongly cautions against it, some have used the AirTag to follow their dogs, their vehicles, and even some of their ex-partners. AirTags have been used in a number of stalker incidents, but Apple has been unable to resolve the problem.
With AirTag, Apple was monitoring an ex-girlfriend
According to reports, a woman sued Apple after learning that her boyfriend had been stalking her using Apple’s AirTag. In her complaint, the woman claimed that her ex-boyfriend had hidden an AirTag in the wheel well of her vehicle. The boyfriend discovered where she had relocated because of the AirTag. The girl claimed in the complaint that she was fleeing her boyfriend because he had harassed her in the past.
Another lady in a similar circumstance filed a lawsuit against Apple as well. She lady claimed her ex-husband had put an AirTag in her child’s bag in order to follow her activities.
Clearly, this is not the first instance in which an ex-boyfriend has stalked a her girlfriend using this technology. There have been reports of men using the device to locate and stalk women.
What modifications did Apple make?
Apple introduced a number of upgrades earlier in February that will prevent intrusive tracking by AirTags. Users will now receive notification if an unfamiliar AirTag is travelling with them, according to a blog post by Apple. Using the tone sequence, users will be able to locate the AirTag.
Apple stated that “AirTag was created to assist individuals locate their personal items, not to monitor people or another person’s property, and we condemn in the utmost terms any fraudulent use of our products. Unwanted monitoring has long been a social issue, and while designing AirTag, we paid careful attention to this issue. Because of this, the Find My network was designed with privacy in mind, using end-to-end encryption, and introduced the first proactive tracking warning system ever. We hope that this establishes a market trend that encourages others to incorporate similar proactive warnings into their products.
