Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to engage in a bilateral meeting during the BRICS Summit in Russia on October 23, 2024. This will be their first formal meeting since the Eastern Ladakh border dispute emerged in May 2020. According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, the two leaders aim to strengthen ties and resolve ongoing issues.

Their last brief interaction took place during the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August 2023, following a meeting at the G20 dinner in Indonesia in November 2022. This upcoming meeting marks the first formal encounter between the two leaders in five years, occurring at a time when consensus on the Galwan Valley border issue has been reached between the countries.

Despite numerous diplomatic and military dialogues post-2020, tensions have persisted between India and China. However, with the Galwan conflict now resolved, this meeting could mark a significant turning point in their relations.

Modi-Xi: 20 Meetings and a Decade of Diplomacy

Since their first meeting at the BRICS Summit in Brazil in 2014, PM Modi and President Xi have met 20 times, including informal discussions during international summits. Their talks have revolved around trade, border disputes, and strategic matters, though relations have cooled over the past four years due to rising tensions. This upcoming meeting is viewed as a critical step in restoring diplomatic momentum between the two nations.
