Fake Garlic Sold as Real in Maharashtra: Cement Impersonates Garlic

In Akola, Maharashtra, skyrocketing garlic prices have led to a troubling scam where fake garlic, made of cement, is being sold to unsuspecting buyers. The incident highlights the lengths to which some vendors will go to exploit high food prices.

The case came to light when a retired police officer, Subhash Patil, reported being duped by a street vendor in Bajoria Nagar, Akola. Patil's wife purchased garlic from a vendor who appeared to be selling genuine produce. However, when they attempted to use the garlic at home, they discovered that it was not what it seemed.

Upon peeling, the cloves did not separate as expected, and cutting through the garlic with a knife revealed that it was actually made of cement. The fake garlic had been painted white to mimic the appearance of real garlic, and was cleverly disguised among authentic garlic in the market.

This fraudulent practice is reportedly occurring in several areas of Akola, as the soaring price of garlic has created a lucrative opportunity for scammers. The cement garlic is often mixed with real garlic and sold, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between the genuine and the fake.

Retired police officer Patil has accused the street vendor of selling him the fake garlic and is calling for action against such deceitful practices. The incident underscores the need for vigilance in markets, particularly during times of fluctuating prices, to protect consumers from similar scams.
