Infertility Takes Center Stage at 30th Kolkata International Film Festival
Infertility Takes Center: Two Indian films at the 30th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) brought attention to the theme of infertility through compelling narratives. 'No Maas No Din Ebong Antaheen (Silence of the Womb...)', a Bengali film, delves into the rare phenomenon of phantom pregnancy, while 'Ratnamma', directed by Anchehalli Shivakumar, tells the poignant story of a woman enduring societal pressure due to infertility.
'No Maas No Din Ebong Antaheen': A Look at Phantom Pregnancy
Inspired by the historical cases of Queen Mary I of England, who experienced phantom pregnancies in the 16th century, this Bengali film portrays the struggles of a childless couple. Director Soumodeep Ghosh Chowdhury highlights the medical condition pseudocyesis, where women experience all symptoms of pregnancy without carrying a fetus.
The film features
Cinematography by Tuhin
Music by Shubhadeep Guha
Editing by Sujay Dutta Ray
The story revolves around a woman, played by Sreya Bhattacharyya, who, after delivering a stillborn baby, refuses medical help when she believes she is pregnant again. The film subtly reflects on the psychological and societal factors that contribute to such conditions.
'Ratnamma': A Tale of Sacrifice and Strength
Set in rural Karnataka, 'Ratnamma' narrates the story of a virtuous woman married into an agricultural family. Despite a harmonious relationship, societal pressure due to her infertility leads her husband to remarry. After her husband’s death, Ratnamma fights to protect her family's property but ultimately donates it to her husband’s other children, showcasing her altruism and strength.
Director Shivakumar shared, “The film is inspired by the silent struggles of women in rural Karnataka who face humiliation and injustice due to infertility. The practice of husbands remarrying to secure heirs still exists in some areas.”
Cultural Significance
These films not only shed light on infertility and societal expectations but also reflect the resilience of women navigating these challenges. They highlight historical and contemporary narratives, offering audiences thought-provoking insights into the emotional and social dimensions of infertility.
