Spiritual speaker and motivational storyteller Jaya Kishori recently found herself amidst controversy after a viral video posted from an airport revealed her carrying a handbag. Social media users took to criticizing her, pointing out that the handbag she was carrying contained leather material, and they were questioning how someone promoting spirituality could use a high-end item like this handbag, more so one said to be made from animal components. In response to the criticism and accusations aimed at her, Jaya came out with a public statement detailing the situation and clarifying any misconceptions made over the matter.

She elaborated that the bag was customised, leather free and even had her name printed on it. "This bag is customized and contains no leather," she said. "Being customizable means it's designed as per my preferences." She added that she had never used leather in the past and has no intentions to do so and was reaffirming personal commitment towards avoiding animal products. She also took this opportunity to explain her stand on the issue of materialism versus spirituality. She said that her teachings do not advocate renunciation of all material wealth and worldly possessions but a balanced approach to life. "People who attend my discourses know that I don't preach everything as 'maya' (illusion) or tell people to renounce wealth," she said.

The incident started trending as the video featured her carrying a luxury Dior bag reportedly worth ₹210,343. Critics soon pointed out that Dior uses much leather, so accusations of hypocrisy abound. However, Jaya Kishori has explained that this view is clarified and reflects in her statement about the spiritual journey integrating practical life.
