Kanpur's Shekhar Bijlani Climbs Nepal's Mount Mera Peak, Waves Indian Tricolor at 21,800 Feet

Shekhar Bijlani of Kanpur has raised India's flag on the summit of Nepal's Mount Mera Peak after braving extreme challenges in his 18-day scale. The achievement was on November 20, 2024, at an altitude of 21,800 feet.

Shekhar, a 23-year-old resident of Ratan Lal Nagar, had already conquered Everest and Kanchenjunga base camps. On May 2023, he reached 17,000 feet while in May 2022, he had gone to 18,000 feet at Everest Base Camp. At 21, he used to claim to be the youngest from Uttar Pradesh to achieve this feat.

Shekhar was the lone Indian in a 40-member international expedition, comprising mainly of climbers from Europe. The kind of oxygen deprivation and the conditions of extreme cold have not allowed many participants in this climb to reach the summit. Shekhar described the high camp at the upper glacier of Mount Mera as particularly dangerous. All climbers started their ascent on November 2.

Shekhar's determination and courage in scaling one of Nepal’s challenging peaks underline his dedication to mountaineering and his love for his country.
