Necro Trojan Malware: A New Threat to Smartphone Users – How to Stay Safe

A dangerous new malware called the Necro Trojan has been identified, posing a serious threat to smartphone users globally. First detected in 2019, this malware has recently resurfaced, targeting over 10 million smartphones. The Necro Trojan not only steals One-Time Passwords (OTPs) but also records user activity, enabling hackers to drain bank accounts and steal personal data.

How Does Necro Trojan Infect Smartphones?

The Necro Trojan malware can enter your device through various channels, primarily from unofficial app sources. According to Kaspersky, the malware has infected over 11 million smartphones, often spreading through apps downloaded from third-party websites or unofficial sources. In some cases, even apps available on Google Play have been compromised, enabling the malware to automatically install on devices without the user’s knowledge.

Moreover, the malware can infiltrate devices while updating popular apps like WhatsApp and Spotify, or by exploiting vulnerabilities in fake browsers such as counterfeit Chrome apps. This makes it critical for users to be cautious when downloading or updating apps, even from trusted platforms.

Why Is Necro Trojan Dangerous?

Necro Trojan is particularly dangerous because it can steal OTPs without user permission. OTPs are crucial for two-factor authentication, especially in financial transactions. Once the malware gains access to these codes, it can facilitate unauthorized transactions, leading to significant financial losses.

Additionally, Necro Trojan can activate screen recording, capturing sensitive information such as passwords, login credentials, and bank account details. This data is then transmitted to hackers, enabling them to compromise user accounts and steal sensitive information.

How to Protect Yourself from Necro Trojan Malware

To safeguard against Necro Trojan and similar malware, it’s essential to follow these security practices:

  1. Download Apps from Official Sources: Always download apps from verified platforms like Google Play or Apple’s App Store. Avoid third-party websites or unofficial app stores, which are more likely to host malicious software.

  2. Limit App Permissions: Be cautious about granting unnecessary permissions to apps. Many apps request access to sensitive information that they don't need to function. Only allow permissions that are essential for the app to operate.

  3. Update Apps Cautiously: When updating apps, ensure that they are from official sources and not compromised versions. Regularly check for official updates and avoid downloading updates from third-party links or websites.

  4. Delete Suspicious Apps: If you have downloaded apps from third-party sources, delete them immediately. Additionally, run a malware scan on your device to detect and remove any suspicious software.

  5. Enable Two-Factor Authentication: While Necro Trojan targets OTPs, two-factor authentication remains an important security measure. Consider using app-based authenticators instead of SMS OTPs for additional security.
