 Ratan Tata's Will

Industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, who passed away on October 9, at 86, has left behind a carefully crafted will, doling out his vast riches to beneficiaries, charities, and those close to him. The man who had emerged as a champion of animal welfare during his lifetime has seen to it that his dog, Tito, will be treated "unlimited" throughout his years by his long-time cook, Rajan Shaw, in a rare move in India that has drawn attention for its compassionate nature.

Ratan Tata's Will: A Legacy of Compassion, Family, and Philanthropy

He bequeathed his inheritance, valued today at over ₹10,000 crore, to his family members, household staff, and foundation. The principal beneficiaries are his brother, Jimmy Tata; half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy; and his longtime butler, Subbiah. His executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, also received a share; Tata paid for Naidu's education abroad and relinquished his interest in Naidu's companionship business, Goodfellows.
True to the philanthropic legacy of the Tata Group, the 0.83% Tata Sons stake worth billions vests in Tata's Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation. His interests in Tata Motors and other group enterprises will similarly flow into RTEF for philanthropic purposes.

Apart from real estate, Tata's will contains Fixed Deposits amounting to over ₹350 crores. His iconic Halekai residence in Colaba, managed by Tata Sons subsidiary Ewart Investments, may see future plans that include transforming it into a museum or perhaps auctioning his luxury vehicle collection.
One of his two properties taken from his father, on Juhu Tara Road, Tata, who remained unoccupied for two decades, was considered for sale. Probate proceedings at the Bombay High Court for Tata's will would take a few months, thus ensuring every detail of his legacy remains intact. Through careful estate planning, the will of Ratan Tata reflects his commitment to the family, philanthropy, and values of the Tata Group in the end, such that the balance between personal ties and a commitment to causes involves charity.
