RBI Receives Second Bomb Threat in Russian Email, Mumbai Police Investigates
RBI Receives Second Bomb Threat: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received a bomb threat email in Russian on Friday, marking the second such incident in less than a month. The email warned of blowing up the bank and was sent to RBI's official website.
Mumbai Police Launches Investigation
Based on a complaint filed by the RBI, the Mumbai Police registered a case against an unknown individual at the Mata Ramabai Marg (MRA Marg) police station. The Zone 1 DCP stated, “A threatening email was received in Russian language on the RBI’s official website. A case has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.”
Suspected Use of VPN
Sources reveal that investigators are looking into whether a VPN connection was used to obscure the sender’s IP address and location, adding complexity to the investigation.
New RBI Governor Amid Security Concerns
The threat coincides with the recent appointment of Sanjay Malhotra as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Malhotra, a seasoned IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, succeeded Shaktikanta Das earlier this month.
Similar Threats Target Delhi Schools
The RBI threat follows a series of bomb threats targeting Delhi schools. On the same day, six schools received emails warning of explosives, prompting a multi-agency search. Earlier, on December 9, 44 schools had received similar threats, which were later declared hoaxes.
