Rhode Island's RIBridges System Hit by Cyberattack, Personal Data at Risk

Rhode Island's RIBridges system, responsible for managing essential health and human services such as Medicaid, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), and TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), has experienced a significant cyberattack. The breach was initially reported on December 5, 2024, but it was officially confirmed on December 10 when a hacker sent a screenshot of stolen files to Deloitte, the third-party vendor managing the system.

What Information Was Compromised?

Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island announced that there is a high chance that sensitive personal data has been compromised. This includes:

Names
Addresses
Dates of birth
Social Security numbers
Certain banking information
What Should You Do if You Are Affected?
If you believe your information may have been compromised, the state has advised residents to take the following steps to protect themselves:

Monitor Your Accounts

Regularly check your bank and credit card accounts for unusual activity.
Change Passwords: Update passwords for all your online accounts, especially those related to finances.
Freeze Your Credit: Consider freezing your credit to prevent new accounts from being opened in your name.
Contact Your Bank: Speak with your bank about additional steps to secure your financial information.

How Is Rhode Island Addressing the Issue?

While the system remains offline, Rhode Island is still accepting paper applications for benefits. The state is setting up a dedicated call center for affected individuals, which will open on December 15, 2024. The state also plans to send letters to households that may be impacted, offering free credit monitoring services to protect against identity theft.
