Early Life and Education
SM Krishna was born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli village in Mandya, Karnataka. Son of SC Mallaiah, he pursued his education at Maharaja’s College in Mysore and earned a law degree from Bengaluru’s Government Law College. Later, he attended prestigious institutions like Southern Methodist University in Dallas and George Washington University in the United States.
Upon returning to India, Krishna worked as an International Law professor at Renukacharya Law College in Bengaluru. His political journey began in 1962 when he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Lok Sabha and State Politics
SM Krishna entered the Indian Parliament in 1968 and later focused on state politics, serving as Karnataka’s Minister for Commerce, Industries, and Parliamentary Affairs between 1972 and 1977.
Speaker and Rajya Sabha Member
From 1989 to 1992, he served as Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and later represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha from 1996 to 1999.
Karnataka Chief Minister (1999-2004)
Krishna’s tenure as Chief Minister was marked by strategic initiatives to transform Bengaluru into a global IT hub.
Governor and External Affairs Minister
He served as Maharashtra’s Governor (2004-2008) and India’s External Affairs Minister (2009-2012), strengthening the country’s global presence.
