AI Use in Assignments Sparks Legal Dispute at OP Jindal University - Read Now
OP Jindal Global University in Sonipat suddenly saw itself in the middle of a legal tussle over the deployment of Artificial Intelligence in academic assignments. Kaustubh Shakkarwar, an LLM student at the university, has filed a petition in the Punjab-Haryana High Court against his course failure, alleging he was accused of using AI tools to complete an assignment.
The controversy began when a professor at OP Jindal Global University learned that Kaustubh had allegedly used AI-generated content for his assignment. Therefore, the professor marked him as a failure in that subject. This marked the starting point for Kaustubh to dispute the actions taken by the university, alleging that he was deprived of the opportunity to fairly explain himself. In the petition Kaustubh said that he wasn't provided with a chance to let the university's examination controller or its unfair means committee speak before the decision was made.

Kaustubh, who is pursuing his LLM in Intellectual Property Rights and Technology Law, further argued that the university hadn't provided enough proof that he had made use of AI-generated content. He was also curious if the university has a specific policy that restricts the use of AI in the papers, and this added to the growing role of technology in the study places. Continuing with the petition, Punjab-Haryana High Court headed by Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri has issued a notice to the university asking it to send a response in the case.
The case is, therefore, bringing attention to the increasingly important role that AI is taking in academic environments as more students resort to the use of AI tools for research, writing, and coursework. This case raises very significant questions regarding academic integrity and the roles of AI in education, and the responsibilities of educational institutions to address the use of AI in academic work.
It will probably have a ripple effect within universities across the country, with implications that would likely lead to a rehaul of the policies governing AI use at universities. The outcome of this case could set an example on how educational institutions treat AI-generated content in assignments and exams.
