In a rare gesture, the Dean of Government Medical College and ESI Hospital in Coimbatore, knelt and bowed down before the elderly nurses gathered around the Florence Nightingale’s portrait at the institution on International Nurses Day.
Dean M Raveendran’s gesture was in honour of the nurses, who are the frontline heathcare workers in fight against the COVID-19.
“You [nurses] are inspiring this institution [in COVID-19 treatment]. We [doctors] prescribe the treatment. But you remain with patients and console them. Nobody else can do the work you do. You are doing a real divine service,” The Hindu quoted M Raveendran as saying.

“Your service has been written by the press and patients. All the good name that the institution has received for Covid-19 care is only because of its nurses, lab technicians and paramedics’ contribution,” he was quoted as saying by TOI.
While nurses and doctors continued their duties, only 20 senior nurses and other hospital officials took part in the Nursing Day observance on Wednesday.
