A video showing two female owners of a Pakistani cafe mocking their restaurant manager’s English has gone viral on social media.
The video shows the two ladies making fun of the man, the manager of the Pakistani cafe for nine years, for his lack of proficiency in English. The clip shows Uzma and Dia, owners of Cannoli by Cafe Soul in Islamabad.
They ask him to introduce himself in English and then laugh as he struggles to speak the language.
Here’s what all happened
“How many classes have you taken for English?” Dia asks. Awais responds that he has studied three English courses.
“So could you please speak to everyone in English?” Uzma asks. As Awais speaks in English, the two women laugh.

“This is the ‘beautiful’ English he speaks,” says one of ladies in a mocking tone, while the other adds, “This is what we paid for.”
Severe backlash on Twitter
The Pakistani cafe owners have faced severe backlash online as the video has gone viral on social media. Moreover, #BoycottCannoli is currently one of the top trends in Pakistan.
“This is just so sad. Class privelege, colonial hangover and depravity of Pakistani elite — all rolled into one clip,” wrote one Twitter user.
“The hero here is this manager and my salam to him for his hard work, dedication and putting up with this!”
Twitterati fumed and slammed the Pakistani cafe owners as “elitist”, “tone deaf” and “reeking of privilege”. The video has received nearly 9 lakh views on Twitter.
“Just got sent this. Sick to my stomach. No words for our English fluent elites. Never seen more tone deaf women with this confidence,” wrote one Twitter user.
“What a disgusting display of the lack of understanding of privilege. It isn’t even about language. It’s about the decency to treat another person with respect,” another said.
Pakistani cafe owners’ clarification
As calls to boycott their the Pakistani cafe grew, the official page of Cannoli offered an explanation and apologised too.
