Afghanistan earthquake claims several lives

More than 25 people were killed after an earthquake hit Afghanistan on Monday. The 5.3 magnitude earthquake claimed the life of victims when roofs of their houses collapsed in Qadis district of Badghis.

According to the US Geological Survey, shallow earthquake was 5.3 magnitude. So far, five women and four children are among the 26 people killed in the earthquake, as per reports.

The natural disaster also caused damage on the residents of Muqr district in the province.

This comes when Afghanistan is already in the grip of a humanitarian disaster after the Taliban takeover of the territory.

Qadis remains one of the areas worst affected by a devastating drought.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range. It is because the mountains lie near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

Moreover, the earthquakes can cause significant damage to poorly built homes and buildings in the poor areas of Afghanistan.

In 2015, more than 200 people were killed in a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck in the mountain range ripping across South Asia.

The assets of the country have also been frozen to bring Taliban on the table.
