Afghanistan: US retaliatory drone strike targets Islamic State in Khorasan

Published Date:

In the aftermath of the Kabul blasts, the US military had carried out a drone strike against a planner of the Islamic State-Khorasan.

This is the same group that claimed credit for the deadly suicide bombing at Kabul airport. “The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. Initial indications are that we killed the target,” said Captain Bill Urban of the Central Command.

“We know of no civilian casualties,” he further said in a statement announcing the first reported US strike since the attack.

The strike was launched from outside of Afghanistan. At least 80 people were killed including 13 US troops. A suicide attacker exploded a bomb in the dense crowd in front of the airport’s Abbey Gate.

As per the US officials, gunmen opened fire after the explosion, adding to the carnage. The attack was carried out by the violent Afghan arm of the IS group.

Joe Biden vows to retaliate the Kabul blasts

After the attack, US President Joe Biden vowed to retaliate.

“To those who carried out this attack as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this: We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay,” Biden said Thursday.

The UN Security Council noted that “no Afghan group should support terrorists operating on the territory of any country” and that all parties “ensure the territory of Afghanistan should not be used to threaten or attack any country”.

President of UNSC TS Tirumurti, presiding over a briefing on Ethiopia, touched on the Kabul attacks. “They (attacks) reinforced “the need for the world to stand united against terrorism and all those who provide sanctuaries to terrorists.

As per the MEA’s assessment, the vast majority of Indians have already been evacuated.

India has so far evacuated over 550 persons from Kabul or via Dushanbe.

India has already told the UNSC that the terror attacks in Afghanistan reinforced the need for the world to stand united against terrorism.

PM Narendra Modi also spoke to his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi on call to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and its implications.

India’s Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla will visit the US next week and also hold talks with the Biden administration.
