A strong earthquake shook New Zealand’s capital Wellington on Wednesday, with residents reporting a quick jolt and buildings trembling.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake registered 5.7 on the moment magnitude scale and had its epicentre in the Cook Strait between the country’s two main islands.
“There was a strong shake there! A magnitude 6.0 earthquake, 57 kilometres deep and 50 kilometres north-west of Paraparaumu, was extensively felt throughout the North Island “says New Zealand’s Civil Defence service.
There were no early reports of damage, and there was no tsunami warning.
Residents, however, reported feeling the earth shake for 10-20 seconds, comparing it to a convoy of massive vehicles passing by.
The tremor struck as the cleaning following a severe typhoon that killed four people and caused massive damage across the North Island began.
“It is already a very stressful period for individuals; care after yourself and those around you,” the civil defence agency advised.
