Vaisakhi or Baisakhi is the harvest festival of Punjab. Moreover, people across religions celebrate Baisakhi. It also marks the Sikh new year.
The day is linked with the laying down of the foundation of the Khalsa community by the Tenth Guru. Hence, Sikhs across the globe wear new attire and visit gurudwaras. They also offer prayers and attend Kirtan Path.
Here is a look back on History of April 13:
-On April 13 in 1919, Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place. British troops opened fire on demonstrators in Amritsar. Over 400 unarmed civilians were killed. It was Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer who ordered the shooting.
-On this day, the world’s first satellite navigation system was launched. It was named as Transit 1B.
-On April 13 in 1970, an oxygen tank exploded on Apollo 13. But the crew managed to safely return to earth.
-In 1939, The Indian Red Army was formed.
-On April 13, 1984, India beat Pakistan by 58 runs to win first Asia Cricket Cup in Sharjah.
-In 2004 on April 13, Brian Lara played the historic innings of 400 runs against England.
-This day India’s famous chess player Vishwanathan Anand became the World Chess Champion for the fourth time in 2005.
-Furthermore, Russia and US signed an agreement to destroy 68 tons of plutonium in 2010.
