The Pentagon of US has released a comprehensive report on China. It details a host of activities that China is up to. These range from Missions and tasks of Beijing (equipping armed forces in the new era) to all-inclusive data on its defense contracts.
Besides, it is into modernising the resources and technology ; the report also points out how Dragon’s growing global influence under president Xi Jinping is threatening others.
The Pentagon report also contains a host of elaborate data on the Taiwan crisis. Not only this, it speaks of the India-China border standoff and the underlying pattern in the multilateral exercises conducted by the PLA in 2020.
China never wanted good ties between India and the US
The Pentagon in its report states that despite ongoing diplomatic and military dialogues to reduce the border tensions, China continued taking incremental and tactical actions. It did so to press its claims at the LAC with India. Besides, it has unsuccessfully sought to prevent India from deepening its ties with the United States.
Pentagon Report on India-China Border standoff
It draws the attention towards how China is indulging in aggressive and coercive behaviour with its neighbours, India in particular.
Moreover, a substantial reserve force from the Tibet and Xinjiang Military Districts were deployed to the interior of Western China. These were there to provide a rapid response to the border situation, the report mentions.
The Pentagon report also confirms that in 2020, China had built a large 100-home civilian village in a piece of disputed territory between the Chinese Tibet Autonomous Region and Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern sector of LAC.
Another striking revelation states that the Chinese Army had even installed a fiber-optic network in the remote areas of the western Himalayas. It aimed to provide faster communications and increased protection from foreign interception.
Furthermore, the PLA field commanders view near-real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. They use situational data as well as redundant and reliable communications to streamline decision-making processes and shortening response timelines.
China augmenting its nuclear arsenal: Pentagon Report
The report has it that China is expanding its nuclear arsenal much more quickly than anticipated.
Beijing could have as many as 700 deliverable nuclear warheads by 2027. This could top 1,000 by 2030 – an arsenal two-and-a-half times the size of what Pentagon predicted a year ago.
So far, it can be said that Dragon is actively investing in, and expanding its land, sea, and air-based means to deploy nuclear weapons. Also, it is building the infrastructure necessary to support this major expansion of its nuclear forces.
To serve its interest, China conducts influence operations targeting the cultural institutions, media organisations, business, academic, and policy communities in the US, other countries, and international institutions.
However, the PLA emphasised that the development of its Three Warfares concept – comprised of psychological warfare, public opinion warfare, and legal warfare.
It is also likely that the PLA will continue to develop its digital influence capabilities by incorporating advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
