A new report exposes that Beijing has been building 110 more missile silos. An American Federation of Scientists (AFS) report says that satellite images show China was building a new field of silos near Hami in the eastern part of its Xinjiang region.
This report comes weeks after another on the construction of about 120 missile silos in Yumen. It is a desert area about 380 km to the southeast.
It also claims that the construction at Hami site began in March 2021. The area is being developed in a grid-like outline, the FAS report says.
As many as 14 dome structures are visible at the Hami construction site. The higher resolution images of the site were provided by Planet.
“This is the second time in two months the public has discovered what we have been saying all along about the growing threat the world faces and the veil of secrecy that surrounds it,” the US Strategic Command said on Twitter.
The report also says that these sites signify the most significant expansion of the Chinese nuclear arsenal ever. It adds that this is the most extensive silo construction since the US and Soviet missile silo construction during the Cold War.
China’s arsenal will gain Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). As per the FAS, it has now swelled to 250 – constituting more than half of the size of the entire US ICBM force.
China on the other hand says that its arsenal is dwarfed by those of the United States and Russia.
