Former cop Derek Chauvin convicted of George Floyd's murder

Former cop Derek Chauvin was found convicted of murder Tuesday. This comes after he put his knee to pin the neck of George Floyd. His knee forcing pressure on Floyd’s neck had eventually killed him.

Mr Chauvin is white now faces a potential 40-year jail sentence. George Floyd’s death had sparked Black Lives Matter protests. These aim for racial justice across America which later became a worldwide phenomenon.

The historic result was declared after the jury reached a unanimous verdict and found Mr. Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter.

Moreover, three other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting murder in the second degree.

The verdict was also welcomed in Washington D.C. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the nation Tuesday night after the verdict was announced.

Chauvin will be sentenced in the coming weeks.
